ICPSR Webinar: Quantitative, Qualitative, GIS Data for Teaching, Research, Repository, Student Scholarships, and More In-Person
The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) is an international consortium and the world's largest archive of digital social science data. Two experts will visit CMU on September 26th from ICPSR headquarters in Ann Arbor. Collaborating with the CMU Library, we will offer a two-hour webinar to faculty and students across humanities, social science, and science disciplines.
- First hour 1-2 pm:
- Overview of ICPSR: sharing and preserving data, scholarships for students
- Teaching Data - Strategies for Success with or without Data, this session will give you ideas for introducing students to data, sometimes without actually even using data!
- Second hour 2-3 pm:
- The AI and (Structured) Data Expedition - What ICPSR has Learned: this session explores how and where does AI fit into the research process, and what are the implications for secondary analysis, etc.
- Q/A about using data for specific topics, develop teaching modules, repository data, and more.

Information about the presenters:
Presenter: Lynette Hoelter
Lynette is an archivist at ICPSR where she serves as director of Instructional Resources, the Consortium Social Sciences Archive, and the National Archive of Data on Arts and Culture (NADAC). She has taught courses in research methods and statistics at both the graduate and undergraduate levels in several different programs. Common across Lynette’s work is the desire to help individuals find, access, and use the data that best fit their needs and to foster quantitative literacy in students and others. Lynette has a Ph.D. in sociology from Penn State University.
Presenter: Linda Detterman
Linda Detterman is the head of ICPSR's Membership & Communications Unit. Previously, she was Vice President of Planning and Research at MORPACE International and held strategic planning roles at Doner Advertising and The Los Angeles Times. With a BA from Alma College and an MBA from Duke University, Linda is well-equipped with both academic insight and real-world know-how. She and her team are clearing a trail for a future where data are more accessible, engaging, and empowering.
